DIODE (D-Flight Internet of Drones Environment) aimes at demonstrating the effectiveness of U-Space services (U1, U2, U3) in ensuring an adequate safety level for multiple drone operations in the same area. This will be achieved through safety and regulatory compliance assessment, test and live demonstrations conducted in several scenarios (including urban environment, airport environment, BVLOS flights). The demonstrations will take place in Italy where the D-Flight platform, developed by ENAV (the Italian ANSP) and active since 2016, will be able to provide, by the end of 2018, the full range of U1 services (i.e E-registration, E-identification and Static Geofencing). It is expected that D-Flight will be able to cover all the U-Space services (up to U3) by 2022.
The D-Flight platform seems to represent a robust and scalable solution for the deployment of U-Space services, by ensuring:
- An adequate safety level for UAS operation, supporting the integration within traditional manned traffic
- Enhance UAS market growth
- Respect of basic principles such as privacy and security
DIODE represents the opportunity to test such platform and define the U-space regulatory framework, thus speeding up the development and implementation of the U-Space infrastructure in Italy.
EuroUSC Italia, thanks to his large experience in the field of civil aviation, acquired by an active participation in International Institutions (such as ICAO and EASA) and working groups defining UAS standards (e.g. EUROCAE WG 105, ISO TC 20/SC 16 and JARUS), will analyze the regulatory aspects related to service providers in the U-Space. We will also perform the safety assessment of identified scenarios applying the SORA methodology developed by JARUS.
