On 12th October 2020 Filippo Tomasello, Senior Partner at EuroUSC Italia, attended the European Drone Forum (EDF), organised by UAV DACH – Unmanned Aviation Association in Berlin (Germany) at the Fraunhofer Forum.
The Conference has been a prestigious occasion to inform the UAS community about sociological, political and technical aspects of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), especially in the light of the upcoming European drone legislation (which will become applicable in less than three months) and the future common rules on U-Space. Renewed experts from politics, business, Authorities, and research and development took part in the Conference. They provided valuable insights aimed at elaborating further strategies, business models, and technical developments in the unmanned aviation industry.
Held under Covid 19-regulations, the conference focused on three key topics: UAS operations beyond visual line of sight, flight operations in urban air space, and sensor data for detection and identification.
Filippo Tomasello has offered his contribution in the session dedicated to “Flight operations in urban air space”. His speech clarified the definition of UAS Traffic Management (UTM) by considering standards and tools contributing to apply the forthcoming Commission Implementing Regulation on U-Space, compliant with the Performance-Based approach.
Who’s who
Filippo Tomasello was a flight test engineer in Italian Air Force until 1984. Then, he was responsible for R&D and for modernisation projects in ENAV, the Italian air navigation service provider. In 2000, he became Manager for Northern Europe for EUROCONTROL. Since 2005, he has worked at the European Commission on accident investigation, data collection, and extension of EASA remit to ATM/ANS and aerodromes. From 2007 to 2015 he worked in EASA as a rule-making officer. Currently, he is Senior Partner at EuroUSC Italia, Professor at University Giustino Fortunato, and expert involved in the AW-Drones Project. He is also a member or chair of several ICAO Committees, Panels or Study Groups.
UAV DACH was founded in the year 2000. It is the largest and most experienced German-speaking professional association for unmanned aviation in Europe. It represents the interests of more than 200 members from research & development, manufacturers, and suppliers, as well as users and service providers from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands and France. The association pursues three main objectives. First, the economic design and use of unmanned aircraft for the benefit of the population. Second, the achievement of broad public acceptance of drones’ usage. Finally, operational safety in the airspace without danger to persons and property on the ground.
